Strength Training: GRIT Strength

What Is GRIT Strength Training?

GRIT strength training is an exercise class designed to improve strength and build lean muscle.  All the major muscle groups are targeted using a barbell, weight plate, and body weight exercises.  The workout is presented in a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) format, meaning that bouts of intense exercise are separated by shorter periods of low-intensity exercise or even complete rest.  A HIIT-style workout pushes you to work to your fullest capability for a few minutes, knowing that you will have that short period to recover. GRIT strength training packs an intense workout into a short period of time--just thirty minutes--making it perfect for people with a hectic schedule.  If you only have half an hour to work out, this is a great choice for toning your muscles and burning calories at the same time.


What Are The Benefits of Strength Training?

There are so many great reasons to add a strength training program to your exercise routine: namely, improved muscle tone, increased fat burning, and improved bone strength.  Strength training targets specific muscle groups, producing a more toned appearance and increased lean muscle mass. Strength training also increases the resting metabolic rate for up to 24 hours post-workout, meaning that you continue to burn more calories long after you are done exercising.  Resistance training is a great way to slow bone density loss and improve bone strength. Bone density naturally decreases with age, increasing the risk of osteoporosis, especially in women. The benefits of strength training to ward off osteoporosis is one of the many benefits of strength training for women.  Sometimes women are leery of working with weights for fear of bulking up too much, but that is not a realistic concern. Les Mills GRIT will help develop lean muscle mass for an overall toned, not bulky, appearance.


What Are The Benefits of HIIT?

Several studies have demonstrated the benefits of HIIT workouts.  HIIT workouts burn fat and boost your metabolism for up to 24 hours.  The intensity of the intervals makes HIIT workouts particularly effective.  Even though it might seem counterintuitive, a shorter HIIT workout can be more effective than a longer workout at a level intensity, such as maintaining an even pace on a treadmill.  HIIT classes are a great choice to get the most bang for your buck.
