Calling all padawans! If you’re looking to get fit and work towards your Jedi Knight status, we have just the thing for you. What could be more fun than carving through moving colorful targets with your lightsaber, dodging obstacles, and generally feeling like the next heir to the Kenobi throne? Of all the gyms in Columbus Ohio, we’re the only one (that we know of) that gives our community members the full lightsaber experience.

The History of Fencing

Sword fighting as a fitness discipline or athletic endeavor began in the middle of the 18th century, as swords began to lose their place as the primary military weapon in armies around the world. The last generation of trained sword fighters began plying their trade as trainers for the aristocracy. Sword fighting became a martial art, passed down by experts and fashionable amongst the landed aristocracy.

The History of Lightsabers

Um. For a few hundred years, fencing grew and waned in popularity cycles like any sport. It’s now an Olympic sport and is practiced all over the world. But in 1977, a movie franchise, Star Wars, by George Lucas introduced a brand new, futuristic kind of sword fighting, practiced by the deadly, skilled, and wise Jedi Knights. Of course this martial art was in the movies and depended on primitive special effects and sound effects, while Mark Hamill and Alec Guinness swung tiny handles around.

But, in the modern age of Virtual Reality all that has changed. Now with the use of a VR headset, people are at the Fitness Loft hours and hours every week immersing themselves in a whooshing, slicing fitness phenomenon called Virtual Lightsaber Sparring. Electronic sensors held in your hands like the handle of a lightsaber make the magic work.

Gyms in Columbus Ohio

Many of the gyms in Columbus Ohio offer great weights, cardio options, and classes. Some have extended options like yoga and spinning. But at The Fitness Loft, we offer regular Virtual Rhythm Sparring, which is a heart-pumping, muscle blasting workout with regular punches and other combat techniques, as well as special lightsaber classes.

Sparring classes are great exercises because they are a continuous aerobic workout, bringing your heart rate within the American Association of Sports Medicine’s recommended area for the entire exercise.

Sparring Lightsaber

Sparring, with or without a lightsaber, is a great form of exercise because it employs the technique of muscle confusion. It’s just like real life action, unpredictable and depending on your ability to act and react in the way that suits the situation. Jogging or cycling are great forms of exercise, but they employ a repeated movement over a long period of time. This means that your muscles learn to economize their glucose and calorie usage over time and begin to see less benefit as you work out longer. Lightsaber sparring is different. You use your arm, shoulder, and upper back muscles to hold the handle or sensor. You use your posterior chain to squat and dodge obstacles, and you use all the muscles in your lower legs to spring and brace yourself as you swing. This kind of whole body engagement maximizes calorie usage and burns several muscle groups that will continue to utilize calories long after your workout.
